ASSISTING THE IMMIGRANT COMMUNITY

Identifying Need

Almost 40 percent of Stamford’s population is foreign born and one-third of those people have been here fewer than 10 years. To address this population’s unique challenges and opportunities, the Stamford Partnership convened an immigration task force composed of government, business and nonprofit community leaders for the purpose of:

• Identifying appropriate day labor pick up areas

• Bringing health screenings to the community

• Establishing readily accessible ESL classes

• Establishing a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization focused solely on immigrant related issues (Neighbors Link Stamford Initiative)

• Assisting immigrants become successful small business owners

• Identifying funding sources for the organization

• Developing a community center
